Church History

The Northwest Church of Christ was organized and held its first assembly on May 21, 1978. It was then known as the Oakwood Avenue Church of Christ. A rented facility located at the corner of Meridian Street and Oakwood Avenue served as its meeting place. The congregation was composed of twelve families with a total adherent membership of twenty-six.

In 1980, this building was destroyed by fire and the congregation moved to another facility on Arcadia Drive. Shortly after moving to this location, the church purchased 2.82 acres of property located on Pulaski Pike.

On May 1, 1983, the church was incorporated under the laws of the State of Alabama as a non-profit corporation. The first trustees were: Norman Dickerson, Jimmy Stone, Wayne Pinchon, Thomas Lee Malone, Larry Gillispie, and John Branch.

The congregation moved to another facility on University Drive in 1984. In August of 1985, construction began on its permanent building. On December 8, 1985, the first worship service was held in its permanent facility at 5008 Pulaski Pike. In 1997, this facility was renovated with additional classrooms and a fellowship hall. It has since acquired 6.3 acres adjacent to its present site.

On December 22, 2002, the Northwest Church of Christ ordained Freddy A. Hall, Willie M. Malone, and Jimmy L. Stone Jr. as its first elders and installed Reginald Alexander, Toney Branch, and Dennis Crutcher as its first deacons. The goal of the Northwest Church of Christ is to promote L.I.F.E. (Love, Involvement, Fellowship, and Evangelism). It is our objective to carry out the mission of Christ.

John E. Branch serves as minister and has since the beginning of the congregation. Its membership now totals 225.

The Northwest Church is active in both local and foreign ministries. It is a current financial supporter of AGAPE of North Alabama, Forkland Church of Christ in Forkland, Alabama, Southwestern Christian College, three Liberian churches of Christ and Liberian College. It has given on various occasions to missionaries in South Africa, West Africa, and the Fiji Islands. It also has an active Prison Ministry led by James E. Williams.
